"Last Name" is an unreleased track by Kanye West, originally recorded for his scrapped Yandhi album.
First teased at a meeting with The Fader on September 27, 2018, the song features Ant Clemons singing the chorus and a sample from "Wally Wilder" by Delicate Steve.
Lyrically, Last Name is about West giving up his surname that was originally given to his family by a slave master. He raps that his children should do the same, and shouldn't have to be confined to the dark traditions of the past. West also compares himself to Harriet Tubman, breaking free of his last name just as she escaped from slavery.
This isn't the first time West talked about breaking free from forms of slavery, with his May 2018 remarks claiming that slavery was a "choice" creating much controversy. West also compared himself to Tubman when explaining this, saying that "if this was 148 years ago I would have been more like Harriet or Nat".
